International Women’s Day 2019 was a good day for the #femedtech network – an open, inclusive network of feminists who work at the junction of education and technology. There was the launch of a collaborative writing space, a ‘Women in the Open’ webinar, and an Open Space session announced for the OER19 conference in April. There were keynotes on issues of women’s equality, at conferences that happened to fall on IWD19. @MarenDeepwell, @francesbell, Lorna Campbell and Sheila McNeill are among the women writing these new connections into being.
I’ve written more about the network and what it means to me in a post on that shared writing space. There, I rashly promised some mini-essays on themes in feminism, open education, and learning technology. Because it’s not obvious, when the field I work in is so full of capable, powerful, well-connected women, why feminism is relevant as an agenda. What are feminists doing in educational technology at all? Or to ask the question a different way, what would it mean to assert that learning technology is a feminist space?
There are as many ideas about #femedtech as there are users of the hashtag, so the question can never be my own. I just hope some of these ideas and resources are useful, and usefully linked in to other writing as it emerges.
