critical thinking about digital learning

Resources: curriculum design

Resources developed over many years, some of them originally for the Jisc Curriculum Design programme. See also Rethinking Learning for a Digital Age – pre-print versions of my chapters are available elsewhere on this site (or soon will be).

You might also find useful some of the resources on developing students’ digital (and critical digital) capabilities.

Course design template pdf
Basic template for planning a module, session or longer course to include digital activities, tools and resources

A developmental approach to course design .mpv
Introduction to the digital development pyramid, and a course design process based on supporting students’ developing skills (digital and academic). Can be used with the course design template and other resources.

Learning activity cards
A series of activities that can be used to develop students’ digital skills, with design tips for embedding into the curriculum and for taking each task in a more critical direction. Can be used as part of a course design workshop e.g. ABC

Theory into practice pdf
Five strands of educational thinking, with a simple account of what each brings to course design: supporting students, choosing tasks and materials, assessments and more

Designing with educational media pdf
Considerations for choosing and using different digital media to support learning, with a focus on accessibility and re-use. Also some general design principles (and reasons for treating them with caution – design is all about culture and context).

Bloom’s digital taxonomy pdf
Well-known taxonomy of learning outcomes in a digital version, based on the digital activities that students say have supported their learning.

Designing online sessions pdf
Live (shared time) and asynchronous (‘own’ time) sessions for different platforms and group formats, considering how each can support learning (rather than ‘replacing’ equivalent face-to-face sessions).

The flipped classroom pdf
What this approach means for course design, and tips for making it work in practice.

Apps students use pdf
Overview of students’ favourite apps for learning, to support choice and use of digital tools in the curriculum.

Supporting students’ digital study skills pdf
Not strictly a design issue, but one I’m often asked about in the context of course design, and that I believe is critical to supporting equitable access o the curriculum.
